One look at the Richard Mille Speedtail, and you will notice its remarkable teardrop shape. Richard Mille specifically chose this because of aerodynamic efficiency, which perfectly captures the essence of a streamlined hypercar and a three-seat tourer associated with McLaren.

Like the Richard Mille Romain Grosjean, the RM 40-01 is a timepiece inspired by an iconic racer that boasts a 1070-horsepower hybrid powertrain that makes it capable of covering 112 meters per second at a top speed of 250 mph or 402 kph. The result is a watch that reflects McLaren’s quest for an aerodynamically efficient vehicle.

The Richard Mille Speedtail is an automatic Tourbillon timepiece, which the watchmaker considers its most extreme watch to date. It’s a racing machine on the wrist, according to Rob Melville, a design director at McLaren Automotive. This statement is supported by Richard Mille’s craftsmanship and approach to problem-solving related to saving weight, reducing resistance, and minimizing vibrational impact. While designing the RM 40-01, the watchmaker referred to the car’s highlights and the philosophy driving it.

RM 40-01 beautifully mirrors the striking details of the Speedtail with its uncompromising design, materials, and finish. The horological engine seamlessly integrates into the timepiece’s available space, resulting in a next-level mechanical sophistication that makes the Richard Mille Speedtail an appropriate companion to its namesake.

Richard Mille uses grade 5 titanium for the key components, including the rotor core, baseplate, bridge screws, and bridges. The material is biocompatible, incredibly rigid, and corrosion-resistant. Meanwhile, the CRMT4 caliber driving the RM 40-01 features a power reserve display and oversized date and function selector complications. These features, including the tourbillon, are all developed in the house.

The new movement architecture is an automatic winding tourbillon with a variable-geometry rotor, minutes, hours, power reserve indicator, function selector, and an oversized date. The power reserve of the Richard Mille Speedtail is about 50 hours, powered by planetary differential and indicated at 9 o’clock.
